An Art labour - Un parto ad arte

(ITALIANO in fondo)

January 2012: I'm in Wales to follow the rehearsals of THE ECHO CHAMBER, a new performance by the Llanarth Group. It premieres in Cardiff, at Chapter Arts Centre, on Friday 27th.

The Echo Chamber
27-28 January; 2-4 February 2012
Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff

I can't quite explain how honored I feel for having been able to assist to the whole creative process of this piece and how much I have been learning from this experience.

I can't even quite explain to those who are not working in the field of performing arts, how hard it is to create a devised piece in  very little time; and especially one of such complexity and richness like The Echo Chamber, which has been created in four weeks distributed over a 9 months time.

Intensive work is an understatement.

What is almost incomprehensible to those who don't work in performing art is how much work is needed to make a show. I don't mean it is the hardest job in the world, it'd be unfair. But for certain it is among the less economically rewarded and the most mentally, physically, emotionally demanding, just like any other creative work of art.

The Echo Chamber is a complex dramatical architecture about elemental matters of human existence, 'a poetic/spacial meditation on time, science, and our place in the universe'.
The poetry of the texts by playwright/dramaturg Kaite O'Reilly is embodied by performers Phillip Zarrilli and Ian Morgan, under the direction of Peader Kirk.

It is astonishing to see such experienced artists at work. The rapidity of decision making, the openness and generosity of the performers' tries-on-request, the complexity of writing and abdicating from good but nonessential lines, the always-ahead foresight and stimulus for conducting, all united for the sake of the work.
I'm speechless while I admire and watch such a struggle to the final goal, that is to share some deep and artistic reflexion stimulated by the perception of infinity while being limited to a lone life.

Just like knowing what's right and what's wrong, art isn't easy.
Yet when it comes to be and reaches the proper tempo both in time and space, it flows fluid to the audience with easiness.

People that are not working in the area often think that the performance with the public is the big job. But no, it isn't.
What costs the most it's the process. And it starts far before meeting up in some rehearsal space, with a long search for material that support the content, the investigation on the possibilities and the construction of the piece, which has a life as complex as the one of a living organism.

It is frustrating, it is tiring, there are no Sundays or spare time, for energy and mind are constantly engaged and focused on it. Even when you have some time off to spend with family and friends, there is still a part of your brain that cannot be switched off.

I don't have kids but I guess it is a little bit like giving birth to a child. Your expectation are growing and growing while you're carrying it in your womb, in your innards; you suffer through the labour of rehearsals to make it emerge; and in the end, there it is, with its own life, its beating heart.

Think of the satisfaction it can be when you've got it there, outside you, and you recall what a great journey it was to get till there. You watch your creature in wonder, just like you watch a starry sky. Wonder in front of a whole universe that is there, with you but despite you, too.

It is always a kind of unutterable magic.

Star-doom - Il destino nelle stelle

Do you believe your destiny is written in the stars?
I don't.
But, as they say, you'll never know, hence I read my horoscope.

I started reading it with a friend of mine just for fun.
We found this website which provided a daily, weekly and monthly prevision, along with Chinese, Maya, Celtic and other varied foresights. It also featured 'the frase of the day', a surreal aforism, different for each sign, that made us giggle like teenagers.

Rob Brezsney
I'm the one that always brings horoscopes to the New Year's Eve party. I'm the one that skips all the news in Metro to directly read how my day will be.

Recently I've been introduced to Rob Brezsny's cryptic horoscope, but in the Italian version which is much more fun. (http://www.internazionale.it/oroscopo/)

According to the stars, 2012 is going to be a bit of a hard year.

My horoscope on my hometown newspaper forecast I will be floating in a state of uncertainty and gain weight (?!) until June.
Well, I can easily cope with uncertainty, since it is quite a natural state for me, but this thing of gaining extra-load is really upsetting me.
My only hope is that my horoscope is as wrong as the 2010 one, which predicted that I would most likely get married and for sure got pregnant.
The rest of the year should go better.

Last Monday, 23rd Jan, was the Chinese New Year. We've just entered the Year of the Dragon.

A Korean friend (it is also South Korea's New Year) predicted that it is going to be a good year.
Some other sources partially disagree with this and they say that there's going to be trouble for those who were born in the Year of the Dog. I'm on of those. Lucky me.

Chinese year follows the lunar cycle and God knows how much the Moon affects me both as a woman and as a Scorpio.

So far the year didn't start very well.
The first week was all work and no fun. I had trouble with transports. A few disappointments for work-related matters, annoying (but not serious) health issues, along with a series of harmless events that managed to make me feel down, triggered my grimmest mood.

On 23rd I received a Fortune Cookie with my coffee.

'All good things come to you if you wait' awkwardly sounds like doom, since patience is not one of my main talents. And I can't help thinking that 'good things' might refer to 'diet and working-out'...

Will the stars be right?
What am I supposed to do? Hanging on until June, far from the fridge?

It is indeed an uncertain moment. I don't even know where I'll be in a month.
In the last weeks, though, back in the West Welsh Coast, I've been blessed by some starry nights.
All the endless, expanding, ever-existing universe there, above your poor mortal head, is a bit of a daze.
No wonder we think it can see ahead of us. I just hope it is myopic.

Known Flying Objects in Holy Days

(English below)

Fase 4)Godersi i propri doni:

In cammino coi punti Esselunga - 2011

ENGLISH

One morning between December and January, every child wakes up excited for opening the gifts that some magical figure left overnight.

In Italy the Giver changes according to where you were born. What you believe is a consequence, rarely a choice. (Seems like this criteria is applicable to many other beliefs.)

There are various Known Flying Objects that coexist in a syncretism not without contradictions, but kids don't seem to mind. They believe in every on of them, in different percentages. Also because in Italy every reason is good for celebrating. And eating.

Whatever referent Giver a child has, the process doesn't change.

Phase 1): Submit Request:
In the form of a letter (mainly used), prayer (for lazy writers) or "fioretto"/making a resolution (for the eager ones).
No minatory letters.

Phase 2): Prepare welcoming for the Giver:
Customize according to the Giver's needs: food, clothes, fuel for transportation, etc.
No "Help yourself" post-it on the fridge door.
Phase 3): Wake:
It must be in the sleep for it is forbidden to see the Giver or you might get nothing at all.

Phase 4): Enjoy your gifts:
Thanking can be procrastinated until next December: it will be useful when submitting new requests.

In the list of the night-surfer Givers, Saint Lucy is the first, between 12th and 13th Dec, but she visits only some cities.
She is blind, poor, barefoot and is guided by her donkey. She is surrounded by a dazzling aura. It is inexplicable how she can read children's letters, unless her donkey is literate. You can't meet her for you'd turn blind and anyway it is no pleasant view because she wanders about with her own eye on a plate. (Rather a zombie than a saint.)

Air traffic intensifies in the night between 24th and 25th December.
Santa, whose real name is unknown (some call him Claus, some Nicholas; in Italy he is Daddy Christmas) mainly supplies children that speak English. That's way he doesn't visit many kids in Italy. However no one doubts he exists because he is the only one you can actually meet. You just need to go to the US and queue at some shopping mall.

Gulliver Jesus - 2010
On the same night, in some areas in Southern Italy and expecially in Naples, the Giver is Baby Jesus.
I never quite understood how he travelled. We know he could walk on water (from Palestine to Naples it's possible), but I didn't know whether he could fly or not.
I've never written him any letter: asking for toys and sweets to a just-born baby, heated by a bull's and a donkey's breath, in a straw cradle...c'mon, ain't it too much to pretend from a third world child?

On the Road - 2011
On 6th January, the last ones to arrive are the Magi or Three Wise Men. The bring gold, incense and myrrh for Jesus, but no normal kid desire that kind of stuff. They rather wait for candies from and old witch that rides a broomstick: the "Befana". If you've been a bad kid, Befana brings you some coal. But since in Italy there are no coal mines, there are no bad kids too. (Occasionally this very same logic has been applied to some legal matters in the adults' world.)

Since it's been a few years I haven't received anything, although I've been a good girl, (may it be because I have no fixed address?), I've started thinking that these night-surfers might be a bit overloaded with work.

That is why I would like to propose the introduction of a new Giver: he a king, a father, a big belly and a shining star.
He hasn't been canonized yet, although he is already a divinity for many.

May Elvis' Sacred Heart shine on you and cover you with wonderful gifts!

Il viaggio - Travelling

(English below)

A. Tarkowsky

Viaggiate leggeri.
Buon anno.

(ENGLISH)
Amongst the most precious gifts in 2011, I received this quotation from somebody that knows me really well:

"There is but one possible journey: the one we do in our inner world. I don't believe that you can travel more on our planet. Just like I don't believe you travel to come back.
Man can never come back to the same point where s/he left because, meanwhile, s/he her/himself has changed.
You can't run away from yourself. All that we are, we carry with us in the journey. We carry the home of our soul, like a turtle its shell. To be true, the journey through the countries of the world is for the Man a symbolic journey. Everywhere s/he goes it's her/his soul s/he is looking for. That is why Man must be able to travel."

A. Tarkowsky

In 2011 I took 14 planes from 11 different airports.
I already bought 3 plane tickets for the first 2 months of 2012.

My journey will follow through towards old and new landscapes. Where are you heading to? What is your present, future, dreamed landscape?

Travel light.
Happy new year.

CABIN FEVER: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"

(Italiano in fondo)

Since mid-November I have been living near the West Coast of Wales, in a beautiful place in the middle of the countryside, where my internship coordinators live and work, therefore where I'm also working.
It takes 10 minutes walk to the local shop (the only one in the village) where you have the guarantee of meeting the next human being.
To move around, unless you have a car (which I don't have), you can catch a bus. The stop it's at 8 minutes walk and, on the other side of the street, there is the only pub which is lively only on Friday nights, but I'd always better be back with the daylight because the last part of the road home is an unmade road in the woods with no light at all.

Even some locals don't know this place. Here no mobile phone or satellite device gets a signal.
You can imagine how happy I was on my way back from Canada, after a 10 hours flight and 7 more hours ahead until here, when at Cardiff airport my suitcase didn't show up.

Aberystwyth, the only place signalled in the bay on the map, is the bigger centre, at 50 minutes by car.

I'm never completely alone, apart from almost two weeks of complete solitude in November. It was an interesting experience but I was so busy starting a new creative project via Skype that the time passed quite fast.

In the last two weeks I physically spent not more than two hours outside the house, thanks to a seasonal cold. Whilst I'm almost completely recovered, I think I'm starting to develop another sort of illness, the approaching Christmas playing its part.

Cabin fever is a term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person is isolated and/or shut in a small space for an extended period.
Symptoms include:
Restlessness: I have a hard time sleeping.
Irritability: why is my f***ing hair so electric?
Paranoia: ask my partners in the project I'm working on. They're lucky they're in another country.
Irrational frustration with everyday objects: I curse at my laptop.
Forgetfulness: what day is today?
And laughter, excessive sleeping, distrust of anyone they are with, and an urge to go outside even in the rain, snow or dark.

Half of the symptoms are there.

Am I doomed to become like this?

Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick - 1980

I don't really think so.

It might be true that "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy", but I'm a girl and my dullness is just the usual wintry colour of my skin.

I'm rather closer to the child from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, although I don't talk to my finger (yet).

I did have a few conversations aloud when I was completely alone, but I was mainly talking to white goods (hurry up, you microwave! why are you so cold, radiator?), expressing thoughts aloud or, again, swearing against my laptop.

They say that a therapy for cabin fever can be simply getting out and interacting with nature, and there is plenty of it here. So, as soon as I started breathing from my nose again, although I couldn't almost smell or taste, I went from a walk up the hill and I was smiling again.

The daylight gently fading away, the intense smell (I could feel it!) of the wet earth, the sheep placidly eating the greenest grass... I suddenly felt the compulsion to take pictures.

But suddenly I had to stop because I spotted him, or rather he spotted me.

I know the picture isn't good but I didn't dare take more, I just turned my back remembering bulls get upset by rapid movement and headed home.

Now I'm facing one more day in here. I've got plenty of things to do: filling in a 7-pages report in Portuguese, condensing pages and pages of babelic slurry concepts into a 500-words text in English, admin work in Italian, packing, amongst others.

The cabin fever will probably fade out in the next 24 hours and then it will be urbanisation again. And not a small one, for I'm heading to London. Just a few days for recovering (then I'll fly back to Italy). A little bit of a shock treatment, eh?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITALIANO

I sintomi includono:
Irrequietezza: faccio fatica a dormire o dormo male.

Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick - 1980

***

A quel punto della mia vita, Michael Jackson e We are the world mi avevano insegnato due cose:

"All The colours of the world"

Queste concezioni del mondo mi facevano commuovere all'epoca.

Slimer Europe and geographical sterotypes - English version

Some think History is cyclic.
Some, with Darwinian attitude, believe in progress, in evolution.
Some amateur historiographers sustain regression.

Whatever direction we are heading to, whether forward, backward or in loop, we are in this together, despite everything.

My considerations are about Europe and being European. In these day is a big issue.
I'm sorry for (some of) the Brits but, yes, you're included.

Here we are, back again to the question of the identity. I do think that there is a European identity, I could feel it when talking and living with people from other European countries and other continents. I don't quite know what it is but the others felt it too, not without surprise.

Europe is like slime dough: you can try to stretch it apart as much as you want but the rest of it will follow. So, if you place it on the edge of your desk, part of it will slowly crawl down and the rest will drop as well, sooner or later.

But I really feel I know very little about it, although I lived in some of its countries. All I have is a bunch of stereotypes, that is mental images about this and that. They are superficial. They are partially based on real facts. Sometimes they're out of date and can become dangerously stupid.

***
So here's how I see Europe in a handful of brisk observations:
(Don't forget that I'm Italian)

Everything that is above the Alps is Northern Europe.
Everything that touches the Mediterranean sea + Portugal is Southern Europe (with the exception of 80 % of France), therefore has something in common with my blood temperature.

Switzerland is a black hole: people who don't take part in anything, happy in their selfish ivory tower. Their towns are so perfect you hardly dare to breath when you're there. It is a big lie indeed that their chocolate is very good. Austria has just the same beauties but has more historical art to see and great pastry.

Scandinavia and Finland might be the richest, and the blondest, but no wonder - after I fainted in a Norwegian airport and nobody helped or even noticed - that it's a depressing place that have the highest suicidal rate in Europe. (I fainted, not on purpose, here and there in the world and I had very different responses).

Germany is admirable - though Germans are quite square-minded, by their own admission. They are the one country that managed to cope best with their complicated past. All the others have a long way to go.

Holland and Denmark are well organisd, very civil, cultured and arty. If they only had the fantastic gastronomy and weather of Southern countries...

Luxembourg is tini-tiny.

Iceland is geysers and Bjork.

***
Italy is one and will always look so, even when the Football World Cup is over and despite the Lega Nord (that, then, should simply stop being payed by Rome central government, if they don't want it).
The same thing for Spain, or Belgium. We or you might feel our inner incommensurable differences but, at a slightly larger scale, such as the one outside our own national borders, the rest of the world is all myopic, they just see borders silhouettes.

The Empires are over. All that should be left is shame, but pride seems to win over in the majority.

The UK is an island and not two, like the English'd like to think. Ireland is greener and more friendly.

Nobody wants to learning French anymore.

Eastern Europe is still a question mark for me. This is the doom of being born when the USSR still existed and having been raised by Micheal Jackson's We are the world.

They say that what you learn as a child, you never forget. (And tv has taught me far more than I would have wished.)
Ex-Yugoslavia doesn't exist but I'm not too sure I could make a list of what came out of it, since I haven't heard much since the war was over, and I blame it on terrible Italian journalism. All I know is the huge immigration that hit Italy in the 90s and, frankly, is quite integrated by now, so I don't really have enough elements to create a draft of identity in my mind.

Roumania is much talked about negatively. Bulgaria and Hungary are pretty much unknown to me and I always switch their capitals.

Poland produced the first, and probably the last, ashamed, lovely and entertaining Pope.
Czeckoslovakia... no, wait a minute, they are two.
"EstoniaLettoniaLituania", that's how I learnt them, altogether.

***
I remember the lesson about European geography at school.
I also remember that, what could have been a day, a week or a month later, the teacher had to take it all back because the USSR exploded in what seemed to me a myriad of countries. These states made their appearance in my confused mental planetary.
I decided that they wouldn't stay, anyway. I decided it was no point to learn their capital cities, geographical conformation, climate, uses&costumes, for, some time soon, things would have changed...

***
At that point of my life, Michael 's We are the World had taught me two things:

1) There are children in the world whose skin colour is like Micheal Jackson's (who was still black at the time) and they suffer.
I believed him blindly, although I had never seen one in my life. I just had seen big men with a very dark skin, much darker than Michael's, and they lived somewhere near the seaside, since I only met them when I was on holiday on the beach, and they were trying to sell towels and sunglasses. They were Marocchini (Moroccans) or Vucumprà (distorted Italian for "Would you like to buy?"). I later understood that that Moroccan look like some of my family in Southern Italy.

2) We humans are different but this is beautiful because the more coloured the world is, the more fun. We should stop all the wars and the suffering and be in peace. We shall make the world a better place because we all - the children in particular - are the world and we all smile and love each other.
I realise now how much Oliviero Toscani's advertising campaigns for Benetton has actually contaminated my interpretation of the song at that time.
"All The colours of the world"
This concept made me emotional at the time. I tried to apply it and resolve the fights with my mates at school, since I knew no black child to be friend with.
***
So, why should things be different for the countries of former USSR?
They had a fight, just like those I have daily with my school mates, and they're angry with each other. But they will get back to be friend again, just like I do with my friends!

I was absolutely sure that, within a few months, the USSR would be back again as one. That's why I refused to memorise the new geography.

I actually figured in my mind the moment in which I will have seen on tv Gorbachov and all those serious men in suits shaking hands to ratify peace, like I did with my friends. I didn't know enough about foreign policy at the time, but I was quite sure they wouldn't have exactly used the words "Pace, carote, patate" (Peace, carrots, potatoes), just like we kids did.

***
These are days of big decisions in Europe. All united yet each in their own difficulty. Trying to make the big machine work and wanting to please one's own private national public.
Britain has just isolated itself with one of the most astonishing political decisions ever. I still think the solution is staying together and change the economical system. If somebody falls dead, the others will be wounded profoundly. So better let go a little now than a lot later.

And meanwhile, we could all do this old Naples remedy against bad luck.

ALTOGETHER NOW!
